Senior Legal Associate

JOB SUMMARY
Reporting to The Partner and Head of Real Estate, Banking & Financial Services, the Senior Legal Associate shall be responsible for delivering the highest quality of legal service. S/he will play a critical role in providing legal support to the Partner and organization.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Working within the Real Estate, Banking & Financial Services Department, duties and responsibilities of the Senior Legal Associate will include but not be limited to;

  1. Leadership & People Management
    • Supervise junior advocates, pupils and interns in the department in execution of client instructions and growth
    • Propose new or review existing procedures to improve departmental operational efficiency, for approval by the Partner
    • Proactively contribute to the Firm’s initiatives and be a positive influence on the firm’s culture
    • Take a leadership role in training staff or identify /recommending trainings and learning opportunities for departmental team skills development.
  2. Strategy & Planning
    • Be aware of and contribute to the development of departmental strategy and goal setting
    • Be aware of, plan and implement strategies for achieving financial and other targets of the department
    • Research on new developments in real estate, banking & financial services law to develop the real estate, banking & financial services practice of the firm.
  3. Revenue Generation & Business Development
    • Lead development of proposals related to the real estate, banking & financial services department
    • Actively engage potential clients in consultation with the partner to secure business
    • Generate repeat business from existing clients
    • Support the partner in client engagement and any business development efforts.
  4. Client Relationship Management & Quality Assurance
    • Maintain an up to date knowledge of real estate, banking & financial services law
    • Take assigned instructions and effectively drive the execution of the assigned client instructions assigned with minimal supervision and in accordance with the departments standard operating procedures
    • Assume primary client contact, effectively build and maintain strong client relationships in execution while creating value for the client through excellence in service delivery
    • Ensure quality standards and timelines are met, eliminating errors and rework for all client work within the department
    • Monitor and control own work and work delegated to others
    • Ensure all client reports due are prepared, reviewed and submitted on schedule.
  5. Finances
    • Prepare fortnight and monthly performance matrix on fees and collections and submit to Partner and Finance Department
    • Take responsibility for billing of clients and follow-up for payment of fees and collections
    • Ensure due accounting process is followed and all expenses are settled at closure of client files.
  6. Records, Documents and Knowledge Management
    • Ensure handling, management, storage and retrieval of all firm’s/client/ project information or files is secure in safe and easily accessible platforms and formats in line with the firm’s policies and procedures
    • Contribute to the firm’s intellectual property (e.g. precedents, newsletter articles, templates, on RFPs, projects, SoPs etc.)
    • Prepare client correspondence, legal documents, etc. as required
    • Generate thought leadership pieces on emerging issues that touch on the firm’s focus areas.

EDUCATION SKILLS & COMPETENCIES DESIRED
• Bachelor’s degree in Law and a certified Attorney of the High Court of Kenya
• At least 4 years’ legal practice experience within a professional services firm, at Legal Associate level
• Proven track record of effectively delegating work to others and supervising the work effectively
• Successfully run a project that involves other people in a legal firm – ability to identify projects and use self-initiative to get them up and running
• Marketing, Business Development skills a key advantage
• Demonstrated ability in strategy planning, driving performance, consistently producing superior results, cultivating ownership while enforcing organization policies and applicable laws and compliance
• Ability to develop innovative solutions to complicated process issues in a fast-paced and demanding environment
• A collaborative management style and a strong customer service orientation
• High level of integrity, confidentiality, trust and dependability with a strong sense of urgency
• Results-oriented, entrepreneurial, self-motivated, self-starter, who is flexible and adaptable to rapid change and has the ability to work in a fast-paced, high demand environment
• Strong consultative and influencing skills with the ability to build strong working relationships across all levels
• Experience translating KPIs to teams to get buy in and results
• Supervisory/team management experience – led a team of 3+ people
• Strong interpersonal, communication and presentation skills with a good focus on organization, and enhanced multitasking abilities
• Excellent organizational skills, with emphasis on priorities and goal setting
• Strong proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and statistical analysis software
• Good technical skills and ability to understand and propose solutions by focusing on stakeholder and organization requirements
• Ability to communicate information, whether technical or non-technical to staff members and other stakeholders in a clear and concise manner.
