VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT

Project description: The study title: The Burden of Respiratory Disease among the Elderly Study within the DGHP Branch aims to understand pathogen-specific incidence of respiratory illness among the older persons and estimate costs associated with influenza disease among the elderly population. The study has an opening as detailed below:

Position: Laboratory Technologist – J/G KMR 8 (1 Position)
Reports to: Research Administrator

Position Requirements:
• Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology,
• Be registered and with a valid practicing license from the KMLLTB
• Certificate in “Good Clinical Practice” and/or “Human Subjects Protection”
• Computer literacy in Microsoft Office suite.
• Fluency in English and Swahili both written and spoken.

Skills knowledge and Abilities.
• Excellent communication skills, ability to work well in a team
• Experience working knowledge in research
• Excellent interpersonal and organization skills

Major duties and responsibilities:
• Keep lab work areas clean and organized
• Perform phlebotomy and prepare samples for investigation purposes
• Collect oropharyngeal and nasopharyngeal swabs
• Receiving, labeling and analyzing samples (blood, NP/OPs, tissue etc.)
• Proper documentation of applicable study data during all study procedures
• Perform routine maintenance of lab equipment
• Monitor the status of laboratory supplies and make necessary orders
• Complete QA/QC assignments on laboratory data, samples and records
• Assist with laboratory administrative duties.
• Any other duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor

Job Summary: Reporting to the Research Administrator, the laboratory technologist will be responsible for sample collection, receiving, labelling, analyzing samples and relaying back the results for patient care. S/he will as well monitor the laboratory supplies, maintain the lab equipment and proper documentation of applicable study data during all study procedures. S/he must be flexible and work within the existing structure, in a professional and ethical manner with competence, accountability and integrity.

Terms of Employment:
The successful candidate will be offered a one year (1) renewable contract as per KEMRI scheme of service and a probation period for the first 3 months.

Remuneration: The salary scheme is based on the KEMRI guidelines.
