Kenya Shipyards Limited (KSL) is a State Corporation incorporated under the Companies Act, Act No. 17 of 2015, and is fully owned by the Government of Kenya through the National Treasury.
The mandate of the KSL is to lead and catalyze the development of shipbuilding industry in Eastern Africa with a focus on meeting the local demand of maritime assets and services from the Kenya Navy, Ministries, Departments & Agencies and other private domestic and regional clients.
The Board of Directors is inviting applications from qualified and experienced professionals to fill the following position(s):

Job Purpose:
The job holder is responsible for planning and delivering logistics and transport services to the Corporation. This includes global logistics, customs and transportation of all components required for the Production and MRO Departments. It will manage processes in line with business strategy and the Corporations policies and procedures.
Key Responsibilities / Duties / Tasks:
Managerial / Supervisory Responsibilities:
a) Coordinate internally with Production, MRO and Commercial departments to build requirements plan for transport and logistics, aligning with strategies.
b) Managing the implementation of transport and logistics Plans by User departments and advising/reporting on the adherence to the Plan.
c) Providing professional advice to the General Manager as required in relation to transport and logistics operations.
d) Identifying, implementing and benchmarking best practices in transport and logistics operations.
e) Manage inbound freight clearance and consignment including customs clearances.
f) Manage and coordinate all transport and logistics operations. Establish related operational procedures.
g) Coordinate transport and logistics providers to ensure smooth processes across Kenya and internationally.
h) Develop and manage logistics and transportation budgets, ensuring efficiencies through long range planning.
i) Facilitate discussions and negotiations with authorities and providers to troubleshoot any issues that may arise in logistics and transport operations.
j) Maintain inventory of relevant international and local logistics and transport legislation and practices. Provide advisory services to management and staff on the same.
k) Develop, maintain and improve transport and logistics policies, processes and procedures to manage risks and ensure continuous effective operations.
l) Deploy technology (ERPs, other) to support effective and efficient transport and logistics operations, while preserving the Corporations assets.
m) Plan and partner with Warehousing Division regarding storage facilities
Operational Responsibilities / Tasks:
a) Manage staff performance through continuous coaching and mentoring.
b) Advise the General Manager on Budgetary requirement for Transport and Logistics.
c) Provide professional opinion to the General Manager on transport and Logistics.
d) Identify, evaluate, mitigate and monitor transport and logistics operational risks.
e) Develop and maintain positive relationships with external transport & logistics providers
f) Coordinate and Initiate measures to ensure integrity, professionalism and application of transport & Logistics operational standards and guidelines.
g) Participate in drawing plans to integrate ERP in the Company’s transport and logistics operations.
h) Devise and ensure implementation of effective transport and Logistics operational risks management strategies.
i) Monitoring and evaluating performance of Transport and logistics systems.
j) Maintenance of database of approved Transport and logistics providers.
k) Coordinating activities of the different transport and logistics committees.
l) Participating in developing strategies to improve transport and logistics performance.
m) Preparing and filing statutory reports to/and from the National Transport Authority and other relevant bodies.
n) Participate in planning, compiling and preparing transport and logistics budgets and plans for the Company. Job Dimensions:

The job holder will be required to solve the following type of problems:
The job solves Transport & Logistics related problems affecting company to ensure efficiency in transport and logistics operations as per the Ministry of Transport, Infrastructure, Housing, Urban development & Public Works guidelines.
Communication:
The job holder will need to understand the following information to discharge their mandate:
a) Detailed verbal and written instructions or requests to and from user departments.
b) Written internal policy documents, procedures, laws, and regulations in the public sector/or the company.
c) Financial reports, in depth transport and logistics requirements, proposals or project briefs affecting the global transport & logistics Industry.
d) Negotiations and communication with transport and logistics providers over new products and technology which may have a significant financial impact on the Company.
e) Detailed verbal or written instructions or requests to employees of the institution or transport providers.
Decision Making/ Job Influence:
a) Provide advice to the General Manager in relation to transport and logistics as per National Transport Authority regulations.
b) Initiate linkages, collaborations and interactions with various transport providers. Working Conditions:
Works predominantly in an office environment with limited field travels.
Job Competencies (Knowledge, Experience and Attributes / Skills):
Academic Qualifications:
a) Master’s Degree in any of the following fields – Business Administration, Economics, Procurement and Supplies Management, Logistics or other relevant and equivalent qualification from a recognized institution.
b) First level university degree in any of the following disciplines from an accredited University/College – Procurement and Supplies Management, Procurement and Logistics, Commerce, Business Administration (Supplies Management Option), Economics or other relevant and equivalent qualifications combined with the required work experience may be accepted in lieu of the Master’s degree.
Professional Qualifications / Membership to professional bodies:
a) Professional qualification/certification in relevant field; preferably Transport and Logistics
b) Membership to a professional body either KISM.
c) Certified Supplies Practitioner by KISM or CIPS or both.
d) Undertaken Management/Leadership Course from a recognized institution.
e) Proficient in computer applications.
Previous relevant work experience required:
a) At least ten (10) years’ working experience three (3) years of which should be in a managerial position.
b) Experience in global logistics, customs and transportation of maritime goods is desirable. International experience in similar role will be an added advantage.
