Job Description/Requirements
Kenya Shipyards Limited (KSL) is a State Corporation incorporated under the Companies Act, Act No. 17 of 2015, and is fully owned by the Government of Kenya through the National Treasury.

The mandate of the KSL is to lead and catalyze the development of shipbuilding industry in Eastern Africa with a focus on meeting the local demand of maritime assets and services from the Kenya Navy, Ministries, Departments & Agencies and other private domestic and regional clients.

The Board of Directors is inviting applications from qualified and experienced professionals to fill the following position(s):

KSL/HR/201/COM/12: MANAGER, BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT – KSL GRADE 3 (1 POSITION) CONSOLIDATED SALARY KSHS 274,473.00 – 395,633.00

This is a five (5) year contract renewable subject to satisfactory performance and retirement age.

Job Purpose:
Responsible for formulation, review and implementation of business development policies, systems, regulations, procedures and programs; identification of business opportunities and potential areas of revenue generation to enhance the company’s resource base.

Key Responsibilities / Duties / Tasks:

Managerial / Supervisory Responsibilities:
a) Reviewing and recommending business development policies, strategies, guidelines, programs and systems.
b) Reviewing market research recommendations and advising on potential business opportunities.
c) Reviewing plan of action and recommending drafting of proposal of new business opportunities.
d) Reviewing investment proposals and recommending business opportunity for the company.
e) Reviewing performance report and making recommendations on business investments.
f) Analyzing monitoring and evaluation reports and recommending strategies to reduce operating costs and increase revenues.
g) Reaching out and pitching to the potential partners to support business investment and development.
h) Supervising maintenance of company business and custodian of investment data base.

Operational Responsibilities / Tasks:
a) Develop customer care and distribution strategies to acquire expand and retain profitable relationships.
b) Develop and implement product sale promotions strategies.
c) Carry out periodic effectiveness review on the product and distribution channels and report to the management and the board.
d) Undertake market research and analysis of market data and preparation of comparative analysis on competitors’ products. Job Dimensions:

Financial Responsibility/Impact:
a) Develop budgets.
b) Approve expenses.

Responsibility for physical assets around the area of work:
Responsible for physical assets in the Department.

Problem Solving:
a) Complex and open-ended problems affecting more than one area of the shipbuilding industry locally and internationally including lack of appropriate laws and regulations within the shipbuilding industry.
b) Broad and complex problems involving more than one area of the Government such as MDAs. Solutions will often be arrived at through committees, involve significant financial risk and require Board approval.

Communication:
The job holder will need to understand the following information to discharge their mandate:
a) Detailed verbal and written instructions or requests to and from MD, staff and stakeholders.
b) Written internal policy documents, procedures, laws, and regulations in the public sector/or the company.
c) Financial reports, in depth technical commercial requirements, proposals or project briefs affecting the Shipbuilding Industry.
d) High level proposals on Government strategic direction on commercial viability of the blue economy
e) Negotiations and communication with stakeholders which will have a significant commercial influence on the Company.
f) Negotiation with suppliers over price, contracts.
g) Detailed verbal or written instructions or requests to employees of the institution or contractors.
h) Preparation of responsive tender documents.

Decision Making/ Job Influence:
a) Plan the work of subordinates.
b) Assign works to subordinates.
c) Monitors subordinates work performance.
d) Appraises /evaluates subordinates’ performance.

Works predominantly in an office environment with field duties including regular travels locally and internationally to undertake market research and marketing of the company products.

Job Competencies (Knowledge, Experience and Attributes / Skills):

Academic Qualifications:
a) Master’s degree in Business related field.
b) First level university degree in any of the following discipline from an accredited University/College: Commerce (marketing option), Business management, Engineering Business Administration, Economics or equivalent qualification combined with the required work experience may be accepted in lieu of the Master’s degree.

Professional Qualifications / Membership to professional bodies:
a) Membership to a professional body; Marketing Society of Kenya or Chartered Institute of Marketers or any other related field.
b) Undertaken a Strategic Leadership/Management course lasting not less than six (6) months from a recognized institution
c) Proficiency in Computer applications.
d) Demonstrated merit and ability as reflected in work performance and results.

Previous relevant work experience required:
a) At least ten (10) years’ relevant work experience three (3) of which must have been at management level.
b) Work experience in maritime industry in the formulation, review and implementation of business development policies and plans is desirable. International work experience in similar role will be an added advantage.
